With the news of Guru’s death this morning, a lot of us have been talking about our favorite Gangstarr moments, albums, songs, videos, etc. One of my favorite Gangstarr moments was seeing them live for the first and only time back in the summer of 1999 in Atlanta at Variety Playhouse for the Fat Beats Grand Opening Event.
I was about 16 at the time, and had been working my ass off at my lil job to save up the dough to get tickets (I think the rest of my money at the time pretty much went to sneakers and gear).
I made it to the show, and Guru and Dj Premier RIPPED their set. I took pics that day with a camera (not digital) and I still have the prints, I’ll have to get them scanned in one day so I can share them.
Another one of my favorite moments as a youngster who was into Marketing was when the video for the song “Royalty” came out with KC & Jo-Jo. If you remember the video, you might remember the scenes in the subway, there was a Gangstarr Metrocard that was swiped to get into the station.
When I first saw that, I thought it was a video prop, like a piece of paper made to look like a Metrocard or what not. BUT I was wrong. It wasn’t a prop, but actually a VERY Limited edition Metrocard that the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) issued in New York City.
Apparently there was a 100,000 of these cards issued and sold at select stations throughout the 5 Boroughs of NYC. If you were lucky to get ahold of one, you not only had a way to get around for the month, but you also had a collectors item.
The Metrocards came out right before the album “Moment Of Truth” and featured a picture of Guru and Dj Premier as well as the info on the album, release date, etc.
Don’t believe me, check it out for yourself.
You can see them in the video for “Royalty” as well.
So the BIG question is 12 years later, who still has a Gangstarr Limited Edition Metrocard???
It’s not too many emcees who can say their face has graced a Metrocard. That’s pretty innovative and a GREAT Marketing strategy. Just one of the many things Guru and Gangstarr did to make me a FAN in the 90′s.
Here’s the trailer for the album. By the way… it’s extra FRESH. Watch the whole thing.
Ms. Monae’s new album “The ArchAndroid” will be released on May 18th on Bad Boy (Take That, Take That).
Janelle will open on select dates of Erykah Badu’s “Out My Mind, Just In Time” summer tour and play Lilith Fair in Atlanta on August 8.
This is my favorite video out right now. Janelle Monae Feat. Big Boi (Outkast). The song is called “Tightrope.” The video was shot on location at WRFG 89.3 radio station in ATL.

From Lance Armstrong on his bike, to a six-year-old in China learning martial arts, movement is the universal language that connects us all. It’s a language of beauty, drama, tragedy and triumph. And the road to athletic greatness is not marked by perfection, but the ability to constantly overcome adversity and failure.

If you’ve been watching TV lately you might of seen the new McDonalds commercial featuring GA State Universities own Joya Bravo. If you missed it check it out here.
Don’t get it twisted either, Dollar Van Demos has been getting busy WAY before these Mickey D’s commercials. My homegirl Allyson in Brooklyn first put me up on DVD back in June 09 when I was in nyc. She showed me some of the you tube clips, and told me I should holler at them. I reached out, but wasn’t still in town when they were working on the next shoot. I’m sure after these commercials, every artist in NYC is trying to get in the Dollar Van now.
McDonalds x Dollar Van Demos Commericial feat. Joya Bravo.
Along with Joya Bravo, Emcee Wordspit also has a similar McDonalds ad spot that will be released soon. Check out this story from NY Daily News . I got the chance to perform on a show with Wordspit, along with Fresh Daily, P.So, and a few others in Brooklyn, NY last summer.
Two New York hip-hop amateurs are climbing the golden arches to stardom after being discovered on YouTube.
A couple of months ago, Rapper Christopher Dupree and violinist Joya Morris made videos with an outfit that transforms dollar vans into rolling recording studios.
Faster than you can say Egg McMuffin, they were spotted by talent scouts – and now they’re in TV and radio commercials for McDonald’s being played across the nation.
“I couldn’t believe it,” said Dupree, 25, who raps under the nickname Wordspit and lives in East New York.
“Never in a million years did I fathom that I’d be selling you McDonald’s. Major artists don’t get this opportunity.”
The opportunity came by way of Dollar Van Demos, a Brooklyn company that lets aspiring musicians record videos in a van cruising along Flatbush Ave.
The artists sign up for a time slot and perform for the camera while real passengers climb aboard the 15-seat Ford for rides to work.
The videos – about 30 have been made since Joe Revitte, 38, started the firm a year ago – are uploaded to YouTube.
That’s where an executive with Burrell Communications spotted Dupree and Morris’ work while trolling for unknowns.
One of Burrell’s clients is McDonald’s, which is promoting a $1 breakfast menu.
“It made sense to collaborate with Dollar Van Demos,” said Rob Jackson, director of marketing for the fast-food giant.
Last month, Morris and Dupree shot their commercials in a van in front of the McDonald’s at Atlantic and Vanderbilt Aves. in Fort Greene.
“It’s still surreal to me,” said Morris, 23, a Georgia State grad who lives in Laurelton, Queens, and uses the stage name Joya Bravo.
“I’m just appreciative that they’d want to use me in this. It’s such a cute concept. I’m really proud of it.”
In her spot, Morris plays the Mickey D’s jingle on her violin and sings while munching on hash browns: “Skippin’ breakfast is not my M.O. when I could eat a sausage burrito. … Biscuit McMuffin – I get down with a coffee and hash browns.”
In Dupree’s commercial, which is about to air, he raps: “I’m up at 5 because morning’s arrived and I’m feeling alive cuz I’m making it.
“You know the deal. Create your own meal. At a buck it’s a steal. I’m making it.”
Both were paid, but are not allowed to say how much.
“I’m saving it,” said Dupree, who is working on an album and meeting with record labels. “But I still live with my mom.”
