Living The “Fast” Life

True indeed we all know September is that downshift into Fall as well as VIRGOMANIA(yeah September 5th baby!). What many may not know is the ninth month on the Muslim calendar is set for Ramadan. This is a time to purify the soul through prayer and self-sacrifice.

Each day of Ramadan from sunrise to sunset Muslims traditionally practice fast. The arabic word for fasting literally means to “refrain” not just abstraining from eating and drinking but also refrain every part of ones physical body. Example is the mouth restrained from idle talk and gossip while the ears restrain from listening to obscenities. Looks like Banga gonna stay in doors cause my cipher is surrounded by all the above! LOL

Ramadan is also a time to re-evaluate ones convictions and deeds. Refine those troubled relationships, give charity, find forgiveness  for others, and refocus on worshipping ALLAH(GOD). The month of Ramadan is when Allah revealed the first verses of the Qur’an, the holy book, to the prophet Mohammed. In honor of this revelation, one thirtieth of the Qur’an is read every night during evening prayer. By the end of the month, the whole Qur’an has been recited.

During the Ramadan month, Muslims  rise before sunrise to partake in a pre-fast meal, called suhoor. Each night after sunset, they break their fast with the iftar meal. The end of the month of Ramadan is marked with the joyous festival of Eid al-Fitr, which literally means the “Festival of Breaking the Fast.”  Yezure I will be in Jonesboro breaking bread with the fam! During Eid al-Fitr, families celebrate with elaborate feasts and dress in their finest clothes. At the same time, they increase their efforts to give charity to the poor and make contributions to their mosques.

Interested in building you can holla at BANGA.

Peace

Things I’ve Been Sleeping On: Caribana: Toronto

Things I’ve been sleeping on: CARIBANA!!!

This past week / weekend marked the 41st anniversary of the Caribana street festival in Toronto, Canada.

“Caribana is a festival of Caribbean culture and traditions held each summer in the city of Toronto – Ontario, Canada. Annually Caribana draws hundreds of thousands of tourists from around the globe to Toronto’s lakeshore. Caribana is a Caribbean Carnival event, that has been billed as North America’s largest street festival, frequented by over 1.3 million visitors each year for the festival’s final parade. The entire Caribana event, brings in over one million people to the shores of Toronto pumping an estimated $100 million into the local economy.” – Source

Would you believe out of 41 years, I still haven’t been to Caribana! LOL. I always say Im going to go every year, but end up swamped with work around back to school time. Luckily our Toronto corespondent Kiran sent over some pics to make me feel like I was there.

I hear this is also a lot safer than the West Indian Festival in Brooklyn, where somebody gets shot everywhere (naw fa real…)
