Remembering Jax #37: Jax In Japan (Video)

A couple of nights ago the homie DJ Rasta Root posted some footage via Facebook of Jax (R.I.P.) during his trip to Japan. Jax traveled to Japan with Rasta Root and Phife (ATCQ) to promote the 12inch that featured “4 Da Cream.”

I remember being around Jax and hearing the story of how they drove all the way to Detroit to re-record or mix “4 Da Cream” with Zo. Jax also had a song “We Can Do This” on the NBA Ballers video game. Then the next thing you know, BONG, he was being invited to Japan by Roots and Phife to perform on several dates.

This footage has never been seen before. Shouts to DJ Rasta Root for posting this for us to see after all these years.

Jax was the type of cat to say exactly what’s on his mind at any given time. I.E. “It’s hot than a som-ma bitch in here” or “I ain’t seen no fat people, and I ain’t seen no black people!” LOL. That was Jax ALL DAY. Miss that brotha fa real! Rest In Power Big Jax.

Remembering Jax #36: HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAX!!!

Jax-Matic.jpg

It’s Officially March 15th, 2011 which means it’s my big brothas Jax’s Birthday. If he were alive right now he would be turning 35 Years Old today. For those that know JAX was a founding member of ATL based Hip Hop group Binkis Records aka Binkis Recs. As an indy Hip Hop artist Jax along with Binkis released SEVERAL projects totaling 10 full released albums between the crew. Binkis also released two 12 inches through Bobbito Garcia’s now defunct Fruitmeat Records back in the early 2000′s. Jax tied to knot, the married his finance Lisa in the fall of 08. Jax unexpectedly passed away on the night of November 3rd, 2008 while performing on stage with Binkis Recs in Atlanta.

If you ever got a chance to meet Jax, he was one the FUNNIEST people you could ever meet. Everything got turned into a joke, and he always kept a smile on his face, no matter what he was going through.

I recorded a lil something for him late last night to rock during his born day. Check it out. Señor Kaos – “Mic’s Blues 2011″ (Special Jax Birthday Promo) J.F.K. – Jax Forever King. Rest In Peace.

Remembering Jax Part 34: Download: Señor Kaos Presents – Spirit Of Jax

Today November 4th, 2010 marks the 2 year anniversary of the passing of Christopher Thurston or better as we all called him… JAX.

The-Spirit-of-Jax.jpg

I came up with the idea for the Spirit Of Jax around the beginning of 2009. I wanted to do a record to pay homage to Jax, but at the same time didn’t want it to be a sad record. I wanted it to be a track that celebrated the man on the mic as the phenomenal emcee he was. The first verse consists of some of my favorite Jax lines from various songs with cuts mixed in from DJ Dainja. The second verse was written more so in documentary style to tell the story of Jax and Binkis Recs from my point of view.

2 years later, there’s still a LOT of music from Jax the people haven’t heard that will hopefully one day be shared. There’s two more records at least with me and Jax together and who knows how many unreleased Binkis tracks as well as solo joints. Jax was a true work-a-holic. And that’s why today we celebrate the Pace Of The Dedicated.

R.I.P. J.F.K. – Jax Forever King

Shouts to Justin Ivey at Kevin Nottingham for premiering this track.

Remembering Jax Part 33: We Still Remember JAX 2 Years Later

RIP-Jax-Jungle-45-art.jpg
(artwork courtesy of Goldi Gold and the Jungle 45 Family)

November 4th, 2010 marks the 2 year anniversary of the one of the most shocking events in my life… It was the night before, when Binkis Recs (Jax, Flux, Killa Kalm) were performing at Lenny’s Bar in ATL, catching wreck on stage like they normally do. During the set Jax collapsed on stage and would never wake up.

He was pronounced dead shortly after at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA. On this same day we would find out that Barack Obama would become the first African-American president. While everyone was partying it up because of this news, I found myself not wanting to leave my home, or even my bed for that matter.

A few days later it finally hit me. Jax was one of the funniest, happiest cats I ever got a chance to meet. I’m sure he frown upon the thought of me being depressed and un-happy. It was at that moment, that I began to pay homage to Jax. I started these posts on my Blog known as “Remembering Jax” as a way for myself as well as others to be reminded about the funny and super talented Emcee Jax is.

I stopped the posts at 32 (Jax was 32 years old when he passed) and I wanted to save RJ33 for a special day… which would be TODAY! The Atlanta Hip Hop community has officially dubbed November 4th JAX DAY!

Today instead of mourning, we celebrate the life of one of the craziest, funniest, rhyme writting, beat making, I Love Hip Hop people that I’ve ever met… and he goes by the name of JAX!!!

During this day Justin over at Kevin Nottingham.com is dedicating todays posts on the site to Jax. He will be posting old videos, show footage, radio show footage, interviews, personal stories from the people who knew him best, as well as showing the exclusive Jax Documentary which many have NEVER seen.

If your own Twitter. Were asking everybody who know Jax or his music to share your favorite stories, songs, verses, moments, and Hash tag #JAXDAY

“March 15th I blessed the crust of the earth with my birth” – Jax on “Who’s Jax”

Today it’s March 15th which means it’s the big homie Jax’s birthday. Last night at the Hip Hop Trivia event in ATL we did a special toast for the homie, and I’ve been playing his music all day. Jax was a great friend, a fresh emcee, and a true genius who has been missed every day since he passed in Nov. 2008.

We miss you big homie. Keep shining down on us.

Remembering Jax Part 31: Who’s Jax Art Show – Recap

Last night Dec 11th, 2009 The Who’s Jax Art show went down at City Of Ink in Castleberry Hill in Atlanta, GA. The event was a family reunion of sorts, with a lot of old friends, colleagues, associates, etc.

Dj’s Mafioso, Rasta Root, and Fudge held down the sounds all night, playing nothing but the finest of Binkis Recs / Jax Classics.

For those unfamiliar Jax was an ATL based emcee who passed away last year. In his memory the Binkis Recs fam (Flux Wonda) put together this art show as a way to keep Jax’s memory alive. Fellow artists were commissioned to create a piece that represented Jax, his music, his personality, his style.

I must say, I knew the art was going to be Fresh, but when I saw these pieces i was like WOW!! You got Samurai Jax, Wolverine Jax, as well as the Shark Skin Suit Sibling Jax. Fresh indeed, check em out for yourself.

Also Never and Won knocked out the mural across the street from the art show. CRAZY!

Remembering Jax Part 28: Still Remembering Jax One Year Later

Today November 4th, 2009 marks the one year anniversary (bittersweet anniversary) of the passing of my big brother / homie / comrad / and fellow artist Christopher “Jax” Thurston who represented the Binkis Records Crew.

Jax-Matic.jpg

(Artwork from the Jax Matic project Jax was working on. Jax flipped Nas’ classic Illmatic paying homage to his Queens neighborhood of Rochdale Village. Unfortunately the project was never released before his passing. I heard maybe one or two cuts of what he was working on, truly amazing. Nobody I know worked harder than Jax did)

A year ago when he passed, I vowed every so often to keep his memory going thru this Blog with the “Remembering Jax” posts. As you can see in a year, were up too #28. If you missed the other ones click here “Remembering Jax” to play catch up.

Soooo I was typing this message on my Facebook page, but it was too long, so I want to share it here, check it:

Today November 4th marks the one year anniversary of the passing of the big homie Jax (Binkis Recs). Today my thoughts are with his family his Moms and Pops, his big brother Cruen, his wife Lisa, nieces, the Binkis Fam, and everybody else who knew the homie, or even the folks who didn’t know him and loved his music. Today I’m not as sad as I thought I would be, but rather thankful to have been able to meet and know such great people. I knew Jax for 9 years. And out of those 9 years we NEVER once argued. He might be the only person I can say that about. I say all that to say, lets keep the homie Jax alive. Play his music LOUD as you can today. Rock your favorite Binkis T-Shirt, lets always let him know he may be gone in the physical, but his spirit is still right here with us.

We love and miss you homie. Keep smiling down on us, lead us in the right direction.

Peace.

Remembering Jax Part #27: Happy Anniversary

Today October 17th, 2009 marks the one year anniversary of Christopher “Jax” Thurston and Lisa Thurston being married.

My big brother and sister were only able to share a few weeks officially married before Jax suddenly passed on the night of November 3rd, 2008. The official wedding ceremony was to take place November 22nd.

Tonight were going to celebrate, reflect, and rejoice for the couple who always cracked the most jokes on me. Lol. There’s a special private anniversary event planned for tonight in ATL. I’m going to try to take a couple pics, so check back soon.

As the one year anniversary of Jax’s passing approaches (Damn… it’s been a year already?) I just want to remind everyone that if you have somebody in your life who’s special, let them know out loud, before the chance passes you by.
