HIP HOP SELLS OUT!!!
You might as well mark October 2008 as the month where Hip Hop has completely sold out!!!
I CAN’T EXPLAIN HOW UPSET I AM RIGHT NOW. EARLIER TODAY IT WAS REPORTED THAT THE BUILDING AT 1520 SEDGWICK AVE IN THE BRONX (ALSO KNOWN AS THE BIRTHPLACE OF HIP HOP) WAS SOLD FOR 7 MILLION!!!
“The building that helped give birth to Hip-Hop was sold to a new owner last week for $7 million dollars, AllHipHop.com has confirmed.
Developer Mark Karasick outbid the current tenants for 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, which is located in the Bronx.
Kool Herc and his sister threw a party on August 11, 1973, in the first floor recreational room of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue.
The address is recognized as the place that Kool Herc hosted his first parties with his sister Cindy, eventually leading to the birth of Hip-Hop music in the early 1970’s.
Tenants had hoped to purchase the 100-unit building unit to preserve the buildings legacy as well as to prevent Karasick from raising rents in order to push the current residents out of their apartments.
In July of 2007, 1520 Sedgwick was declared eligible to be listed as a state and federal landmark.
Kool Herc told reporters he was disappointed that no one from the Hip-Hop community “stepped up to the table in some form of fashion” to show support.
The sale marks a two-year battle for the residents, who now fear that their rents will be raised in order to cover the costs associated with selling the building.”

IM SURE SOME OF YOU WILL DISAGREE, BUT HELL IF YOUR RAPPER AND YOUR PAID KOOL HERC DESERVES A CHECK!!! HELL I MIGHT PAYPAL THE MAN A COUPLE HUNDRED MY DAMN SELF!

Maaan you know damn well most of them cats don’t know who Loo; Herc is,plus it’s black folks too,you know it’s hard for us to think back past the current generation. We don’t ever have respect for our lineage. Hasn’t History shown you that. Yes HIS Story, that’s why it’s His Story, cuz we don’t have one of our own.
remember white cats have a certain respect for their folks. Ed McMahon was about to be evicted from his multimillion dollar home. What happened. Trump just gave him the bread. On some “this is Ed McMahon, a legend, no way in hell I’m seeing Ed Mcmahon not keep his million dollar home.”
That’s why we losing fam! Brothas claim they got ALL this money! But don’t never spend when it’s time. Sean Kingston said his chain was worth 100 Million!!! Whether it’s true of not, the fact a man could think about spending that much on a damn necklace but not own any property is disgusting!
yeah…i mean, like M said, I doubt alot of the rap cats with money even know who Kool Herc is…and if they do, sheid, I’m not convinced that they even knew this was happening. I’d like to think that if more of the rap cats (that would care in the first place)knew, that they’d step up to the table. but in semi-defense of the cats you just called out…yeah, they obviously got money. But when Herc says “step up to the plate” surely that can’t just be refferring to the multimillionares. There are surely a couple hundred-thousandare rappers out there who are actually from New York who could have “stepped up to the plate” as well…I don’t know who all did or did not, so I can’t really call names….but yeah, at the end of the day, this is sad. But, shit like this is bound to happen because he’ll its alot of people in the culture/game/industry whatever you want to call it who simply jump in and dont bother to really look back at who did what before them…and that aint just rappers, im talking everybody involved down to doormen at the club…
I was at the ’03 Source Awards weekend and it pained me to see that Kool Herc couldn’t even get into the venue where they were hosting the Celebrity Basketball game THAT HE WAS ALSO PLAYING IN! Why, because the idiot manning the door, who just so happened to be rocking the latest in Hip Hop fashions didnt know who he was.
I saw something similar to this just last week at Tongue & Groove where a bouncer was giving Diamond D and Red Alert a hard time. When someone finally told him who Red Alert was all he said was “I aint from up top, im a bamma nigga, i dont know bout that shit.”
Nigga please, Im A-town to the fullest and even i know who the fuck Red Alert is…even my younger brother does and we aint no old cats.
But yeah, shit is retarded and sad….thats it.
Please don’t say that we don’t look out because we know our roots, it just how we look at it. When Coretta Scott King needed somewhere to stay Oprah put her up in a loft in Buckhead. I do agree with you though someone should have stepped up and bought the spot. It is wrong on so many levels. But then again.. what would they do with the building? Make it a landmark, museum? What did Jeezy say it’s a recession EVERYBODY BROKE.. the spot was bought for 7million. What rapper do YOU KNOW that is making purchases more that are in the millions. Talk is cheap…Everyone is struggling now to stay on top of paying their bills.. Just cause you a millionare doesn;t mean ISH because you have to work even harder to hold that status!
oh yeah I know who Red Alert is, Kool Herc, ALLL of them.. but I wouldn’t know who they were if I saw them in the street.. Thats just like any of the old White singers.. I would be looking at them crazy!
plain and simple, people don’t know to communicate and they don’t respect lineage.
i never heard that the building in question was up for sale and it’s only cause i am reading it today, so you can effectively say that the urgency of this situation was not properly conveyed to the proper people. however, i know that more than a few cats probably turned up their nose when they heard about it. people are shady, especially the ones closest to you. or that you think are closest. say one thing in your face, and other stuff when you are not around.
sorry to see that building go. the question now is how much will the owner take for it now?
If you pay attention to the Blog you would of see we talked about this back in Jan 2008. Check this link — http://thekaoseffect.com/blog/?p=524
If I knew about this, and I dont even live in New York or apart of the industry – I know all them cats knew about it. Cats need to stop paying so much attention to Soundscan, and pay attention to the News.
Alexis – “What would you do with the building?” – Are you crazy, Yes it should be a landmark, but at the same time the families that have been living there for the past 30 years should get to keep their home. Put a Statue of Kool Herc downstairs in the front. Put a lil plaque up like they do in the white neighborhoods, that says this place is a Landmark!
7 Million? Did you not hear me just say cats is bragging about spending 1 Million on Jewerly. We gotta stop letting these cats front on us, then when something real happen – it’s okay for them to be lying about how much money they make.
Russell / Irv Gotti / Hov ETC… could of easily put a concert together to raise $$$. 7 Million would of made EASILY! I think we under – estimate how much revenue Hip Hop makes yearly!!!
I’ve been fortunate to eat off the culture without having a job for the past 7 years, and I always salute the cats who paved the way for me to eat. When I seen Grand Wizard Theodore (the man who invented the scratch) I gave him $20 of GP and said Thank You! What would Hip Hop be without the Scratch???
Jay Z said “I’m over charging brothas for what they did to the Cold Crush” – We dont believe you, you need more people!!!
Nas was right “Hip Hop Is Dead!”
Damn…
I concur Senor and please don’t get fooled into thinking we are in a recession. Zeitgeist 1 & 2 is your best friend right now. Luda is making in investments, T.I. is investing as much as possible before his bid. But shoot where was Dave Chappelle, The Roots, Common and all those cats?
