Its A Rap

19 years ago a show was created on BET to offer the hip hop masses all they could eat.  Rap City was the name that came on the scene back in 1989.  Next month it will be meeting its maker thanks to the twisted minds of Viacom. People wonder why the 90′s was the illest era? You had Yo!MTV RAPS showing the commerical cuts for all the popular rappers while Rap City showed the up and coming acts as well as the commercial hitters. You got a double dose on the weekend with the Top 10 if you missed the week too.

Damn… Its like we are looking at history going down the drain but when you look how wack the show became its like off with the head. The run was proper from jump with comedian Chris Thomas aka The Mayor of Rap City holding it down. Courting the same time was Hans Dobson then came Prince Dejour. The livest host in my eyes was Joe Claire. The key to the show was having comedians who kept the show thoro and entertaining. Joe beasted the show till 1999 along with sista girl Big Lez. I understand for a lot of folks you have no idea who I’m talking about but for those who got the knowledge just big up these cats for reala! The show underwent a transformation for the millienum with Big Tigger taking over and the show becoming Rap City: DA Basement. The one thing we can all say about Tigger was that he held his own in the booth with everyone. I think we witnessed the end of truly freestyling during his run of the show.

In 2005 the powers that be reformatted the show again and ousted Big Tigger for Mad Lame…i mean Mad Linx. When Linx took off for the Road Tour the durty J.Nicks came on set to stink up the building or a commerical rapper would sit in. Also the show was cut from 2 hours of videos to 1 hour. In 2006 Q45 came to hold it down and musical chairs insued keeping the show inconsistent and disappointing. Shit hit the fan when they finally sent the show to the 1am slot in 2007. Every year the show got worse and so did the results. Only a month removed the show went back to 5pm and proceeded to rot on tv. Now a year later the show is set to be cancelled on October 26th. This was the best way to expose the world to the djs across the country as well as new artist looking to raise awareness. Now that is being laid to bed you can only look to the net for your fix.

This is just part of the plan to phase out music totally on the Baboon Entertainment Tel-lie-vision!

BANGA!

If you can find some vintage Rap City clips from the 90′s leave summin in the comments! BANGA will show a lil appreciation(hint hint)!

  • People are quick to assume that VIACOM plays a part in the demise of RAP CITY/ BET when in fact the powers that be at BET (Debra Lee, Stephen Hill, & Reginald Hudlin) have been way out of touch with the viewers for a long time. RIP RAP CITY

  • I concur

Now this has nothing to do with Rap City, but that beat was one of the first themes I heard when the show came on.
