Latin America by and large has svreee economic divisions within the population with relatively small wealthy class and equally small middle class in each country. The poverty of the masses is what lends itself to the demagogues and populists as evidenced by the repeated wins by the Peronistas in Argentina, the left with Lula in Brazil and now Morales in Bolivia raised by the native (altiplano) vote. Corruption at all levels of government have disillusioned the majority who never saw any benefits from the experiments with open markets and fiscal responsibility ( there was very little of that). The only exception has been Chile and they have just tilted left, though I don’t see them straying too far left as the majority does see the benefits of a vibrant economy. Have been watching and doing business in these lands for 30 years, don’t see where they are going to learn to overcome the corruption that corrodes their future.
