Movies To Check For: Gil Scott-Heron “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” BBC Documovie

Yesterday in NYC there was a memorial for Gil Scott-Heron. Rumor has it, Kanye West showed up and performed “Lost In This World” which sampled GSH from his last LP. With the recent passing of GSH many college radio stations across the country have been dedicating whole shows, or just re-educating their listeners about some of his best works. Earlier this evening WREK 91.1 FM in ATL played about a hours worth of Gil’s music on the Electric Boogaloo show. If your a fan of Hip Hop you’ve probably heard Gil Scott without even knowing it. He’s been sampled by artists such as Kanye, Common, Little Brother, and even my homie Jax who sampled “We Beg Your Pardon” on his underground classic JFK LP.

Gil Scott-Heron left us with a catalog of music to listen too, learn from, and study for years to come. With his recent passing there have been a few things popping up online that I never knew about, including this BBC Documentary.

Bit shouts to the homie Steve Deniro from Freshly Serious who spotted this via Hypebeast and put me on. It’s a documentary broken down into 4 seperate clips put together by British station BBC. It was originally broadcast in 1996 and features Gil talking first hand about his life. Also features Brian Jackson, Mos Def, Chuck D, Clive Davis, etc. “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” but I think it will be digitized. Rest In Peace Gil Scott Heron
